Head Eiichi Yoshimura
Chief researcher Yoichi Hatamoto
Specially appointed researcher Honda Nanako
Technical assistant Rikako Horikawa, Naoya Oi, Yu Oka
Office administrator Hatuka Murata

2. Background and objectives

We conduct research on energy metabolism and appropriate intake of major nutrients such as protein, fat, and carbohydrates, with the aim of contributing to the establishment of dietary intake reference for energy and major nutrients. We also conduct research on the pathogenesis of obesity and lifestyle-related diseases caused by excessive or insufficient intake of these nutrients, as well as on methods to prevent these diseases.

3. Overview of our research

  1. We evaluate methods for estimating energy requirement in daily life using the double-labeled water method and the human calorimeter method, and conduct investigative research that will contribute to the formulation of estimated energy requirements in the Dietary Reference Intakes. We will also conduct research on energy metabolism (energy expenditure and substrate utilization) at rest and during activity, as well as on the control mechanisms and fluctuation factors of energy balance, including diet.
  2. We are assessing protein requirements in addition to energy requirements in healthy and diseased subjects. In addition, we are conducting research to identify individual differences in digestion and absorption rates, as well as to identify intestinal bacteria and metabolites associated with digestion and absorption rates.
