2. Background and objectives

It has been reported that improving physical activity and reducing sedentary behavior are related to good health outcomes. Health Japan 21 sets numerical targets for physical activity and promotes improvements in step counts and exercise habits. However, the National Health and Nutrition Survey shows that the changes in step counts and exercise habits over time have remained stable or are gradually declining. Thus, a gap exists between evidence and society. Further research is needed to clarify the causes and set numerical targets for physical activity. Furthermore, recent research has revealed that physical activity modifies the onset of diseases in relation to personal predispositions such as genetics. In this way, by clarifying the relationship between individualized physical activity/exercise and the onset of disease, rather than just the average values for a group, it may be possible to propose good health outcomes for each individual.

3. Overview of our research

  1. Through field surveys and analysis of public data, from an epidemiological perspective, to research and the relationship between physical activity/sedentary behavior and disease prevention (metabolic syndrome, frailty, cancer, dementia, etc.), extension of healthy life expectancy, and well-being, and clarify related factors.
  2. To clarify factors related to the gap between evidence of physical activity/sedentary behavior and behavior in the real world, practicing to social implementation.
  3. To clarify the extent to which physical activity/sedentary behavior modifies individual predispositions and disease onset.
